Chronology


A visual artist, heir of the Guanajuato artistic tradition, with a rhythmic expressionist language, intimately related to music, men’s passions and the every way of life. His visual improvisations and sceneries have appeared with main jazz musicians. Representative of generation of the 50's and Mexican contemporary painting, with dozens of national and international recognitions, considered by the specialized critics as a prolific and versatile artist, in constant evolution. Jazzamoart has presented his work in more than 340 exhibitions in México, USA, Canada, Latin America, West Europe and Japan, his work is in important public and private collections, and he has collaborated in diverse publications, workshops, conferences and LP´s & CD’s. Member of the Creators' National System of Art of the CONACULTA from 1993 to 2000.

1951 Francisco Javier Vázquez Estupiñán is born in Irapuato Guanajuato, México on May 28, he is the major one of six brothers and one sister, Javier Vázquez Farfán, his father, also painter, inventor of objects and his first teacher. Rosaura Estupiñán Cerrillo, his mother, unconditional on all the personal and professional aspects.

1963 After knowing his work in an infantile exhibition in Chapultepec's Castle, Agustín Yañez, Secretary of Public Education gives him a scholarship.

1966 He is part of a juvenile exhibition in the National Anthropology Museum, México city.

1969 Studies in San Carlos, National School of Arts, México city where he meets great teachers as Manuel Herrera Cartalla and Gilberto Aceves Navarro among others.

1971 Exhibits for the first time collectively and professionally in the Cultural Center Isidro Fabela, México city.

1972
Presents his first individual exhibition in the Gallery of Alvaro Obregón District, today San Angel Cultural Center, México city.

1973 Marries Nora Smith, who would turn into his muse, companion of life and representative.

1974 His first child is born, Jazzamoart, name created by the artist and his wife, as a life´s philosophy in his passion for Jazz, love in all manifestations and art. After his son's name he decides to use it as his pseudonym for artistic purposes.

1975 Shows his first sculptures in ARCON Gallery Contemporary Art in México city.

1976 Presents his work at Tercer Espacio Gallery in Tampico, Tamaulipas.  Also in  Juglar and El Agora Galleries, México city.

1977 Exhibits his work in Casa de la Paz, México city.

1979 His second son is born, for whom they create the name of Viart, it means Life and Art. Jazzamoart presents an exhibition in Guanajuato's Principal Theatre and takes part in the Contest of Painting Dante Alighieri in México city.

1981 For the first time participates in the National Art Contest of the INBA, and makes the scenery for the Jazz Festival in the National Auditorium, México city.

1982 Exhibits in the I Biennial Tamayo, in the National Art Contest, Sculpture Section  of  INBA and receives Honorific Mention in the National Art Contest, Painting Section of  INBA, México city. 

1983 Exhibits in the Metropolitan Gallery of the UAM, José María Velasco Gallery and the Chapultepec Gallery of INBA, México city. Together with Alain Derbéz, Chac and Rockdrigo  presents a multidisciplinary performance at Modern Art Museum, México city.

1984 Participates in exhibitions at the Fine Arts Palace Museum, Del Chopo Museum and the Ollin Yolliztli Auditorium, México city and in Casa de Artes de Oaxaca. Presenting his work Jazzamoart meets at Art Fair of the American School, México  city, one of his principal art collectionists, Dr. Mark Rubens.

1985 His Third son is born, Poettier, the created name means Poet of the Earth. Arnold Belkin and Jacobo Borges invite him to be part of the group Creative Processes, integrated by Enrique Bostelmann, Teresa Morán, Luis Argudín, Andrés de Luna, Enrique Estrada and Carlos Montemayor, among others. He exhibits in the Museum of Phoenix, USA, in the  L'space Cardin Gallery in Paris, France, in the International Drawing Prize Joan Miró in Barcelona, Spain and in the Rufino Tamayo Museum. Honorific Mention obtained in the National Art Contest, Sculpture Section of INBA,  México city.

1986 Part of the exhibition  Confrontation 86 in the Fine Arts Palace, México city and in the I International Biennial of Painting, Cuenca Ecuador.  He receives Honorific Mention in the III Tamayo Biennial and the Great Prize in the I Biennial of Miami, USA.

1987  Exhibits in the Bronx Museum of Art in New York, USA. The Carrilo Gil Art Museum and San Carlos Museum, México city. He receives eloquent critics on his work by Raquel Tibol, obtains Honorific Mention in the contest " 50 years of fight for the nourishment " and wins the Acquisition Prize in the National Art Contest, Painting Section of  INBA,  Mexico city.

1988 With the support of  Niño de Rivera´s family  he returns to New York, USA and exhibits in Scot Alan Gallery. He presents his work in Modern Art Museum, City Museum and the Mexican Talent Gallery. Is given Honorific Mention in the National Art Contest, Drawing Section of  INBA, México.

1989 Paints a mural of 360 square meters in the Universidad Autómoma Metropolitana, suggested by Evodio Esclante with whom in addition and together with Alain Derbéz and Ariel Guzik  edited the LP disc “La Cocina, Música para Bailar”. Exhibits in the Historic Union Station, Bilingual Foundation of the Arts in Los Angeles, California, USA and in the IX International of Art Biennial in Valparaiso, Chile.  Obtains Honorific Mention in the contest Dante Alighiere of the Italian government and wins the prize of the Bicentenary of the French Revolution in the French Alliance of  México city.

1990 With the unconditional support of the  Martel family installs a workshop in Paris, France and in México exhibits in the of Modern Art Museum and the  Estampa National Museum. His work is well praised by art critic Teresa del Conde  and also receives the Prize of the VI Festival  of the Historical Center, México city.

1991 Exhibits in Iturralde Gallery,  invited by sculptor Erwin Binder exhibits in Los Angeles WTC,  California, USA. In México city exhibits in the Contemporary Art Gallery. The filmmaker José Alfredo Botaya films a documentary on Jazzamoart´s recent work. Obtains Honorific Mention in the  IV National Biennial of Drawing Diego Rivera of INBA, México city.

1992 With the support of the art collectionist Francisco Servin makes a monumental sculpture and the scenery for the International Festival of Jazz in the National Auditorium where B.B. King and Ray Charles perform.

1993 Participates in the Europalia Festival   in Ostend, Belgium. Jorge Alberto Manrique writes for his exhibition in ITESM, Estado de México. Jazzamoart exhibits in San Agustin's Ex-temple in Zacatecas, in Iturbide's Palace México city and in the Triennial  of Osaka, Japan.

1994 Exhibits in the Belem Cultural Center in Lisboa, Portugal. In Centro Médico Nacional XXI Century, México city and in the   Fine Arts Institute of San José de Costa Rica. He works on bullfighting topics and obtains Honorific Mention at the Pascual II National Biennial  of Painting.

1995 The art critics  Bertha and Gloria Taracena promote the creation of a monumental sculpture in West Hollywood, California, USA. A giant Judas was  made by Jazzamoart in San Angel Cultural Center, he exhibits in the Cineteca Nacional and obtains Honorific Mention in the I International Biennial of the Toy Art - object at the José Luis Cuevas Museum, México city.

1996  Exhibits in the Gallery Norske Grafikere in Oslo, Norway. De El Carmen Museum, Diego Rivera’s Mural Museum and Siqueriros´ Cultural Polyforum, México city and in the Museums of Kerava, Joenbuv and Rovaniemi in Helsinki, Finland.

1997 In México exposes in the  Pecannins Gallery and Kin Gallery, Casa de la Cultura in Irapuato, Guanajuato, in Denmark at the Mexican Cultural Institute of Copenhagen, in Portugal in the  Sintra's Do Brinquedo Museum and in USA in the Museum of the Americas of Denver. 

1998 Exhibits in the Gallery Kyra Marlat in Berlin, Germany and in the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach California, USA. He is nominated an Honorary member of the Guanajuato´s Art Committee and when visited colleague Fernando Leal, makes a series of paintings, in Milan, Italy.

1999 Jazzamoart is invited by  Federico Ramos to expose in the Diego Rivera´s House Museum in Guanajuato, in addition he takes part in exhibitions in San Ildefonso's Museum and the Museum of the SHCP in Mexico city. The pianist Olivia Revueltas presents in Los Angeles, California, USA, the CD “Round Midnight in LA” with Jazzamoart's art. Receives  San Juan Bautista´s Medal in the University  of La Salle, México city.

2000 Musician Francisco Téllez composes a series of musical pieces inspired by Jazzamoart's artwork. He participates in art shows at the University of Sciences and Arts Museum, UNAM, the Cabañas Cultural Institute in Guadalajara, the MACAY Museum in Mérida, México and the Rye Arts Center in New York, USA.

2001 Master Jose Luis Cuevas invites him to exhibit in his museum and Jorge Juanes writes for the exhibition catalogue. He exhibits in the Gallery of the International Airport of México and in the New Gallery Space in New York, USA. Invited by the arquitect Richard Geary exhibits in the Art in Context Gallery in Naples, Florida, USA.

2002 Presents his work collectively in the Archivos art show at the Museum Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain and individually in the Cervantino International Festival in Guanajuato also at  Lourdes Chumacero Gallery, México city  where he presents works on the football theme. He obtains the Golden Crab of Tampico´s Center, A.C.

2003 Exhibits in the Institute of México in San Antonio, Texas and Washington, D.C. in USA. He is part of the exhibition Prodigies of End of Century in the MARCO Museum in Monterrey. Starts to work with ceramic at Talavera de la Reyna and paints a Via Crusis for San Vicente Ferrer´s Parish, México city. The sculptor Sebastian invites him to make monumental sculptures for the Corridor Chactemal in Quintana Roo and Sculptural Garden Juan Soriano in Colima, México.

2004 Creates a totem in Saint Jean Port Joli, Quebec, Canada. Exhibits in the Manuel Felguérez Museum of Abstract Art, Zacatecas, in the Art Museum of Tlaxcala and in the México Space within the  International Jazz Festival of Montreal, Canada. He receives the Key of the City and the Silver Gardenia in Nayarit, México. Presents CD Sonora Onosón with Alain Derbéz, Iraida Noriega, Gerardo Bátiz, Juan Christóbal Pérez Grobet, among others.

2005 Exhibits in Tour de la Bourse in Montreal, Canada and in the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in Kobe, Japan. He designs the prize for the México  Jazz Festival, distinction that Wayne Shorter and Diana Krall received among others. Thanks to the support of the Levin family he paints canvases of up to 6 x 8 meters in San Lucas´ workshop, Estado de México. Invited by musician Arturo Cipriano presents a scenery in the Zócalo, México city. He receives First Prize of Painting, Section Modern Art at the International Art Contest in Australia.

2006 Creates an interactive sculpture for the  Papalote Child Museum also exhibits in the WTC and the Stock Exchange Building, México city. The Ph. D.´s in economics Alejandro Hernández and Germán Rojas invite Jazzamoart to create the commemorative design for 60 anniversary of the ITAM and for the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association meeting. He takes a retrospective exhibition to his hometown to be shown at the ITESM, Irapuato Campus. In USA he presents his work in the Castle Gallery of New York and in Milan, Italy in the  Vismara Gallery. He consolidates a work of creation together with his colleague Vladimir Cora. He obtains the first prize in Artelista's Contest, in Barcelona, Spain.

2007 His first grandson is born,  the third Jazzamoart. Reyna Henaine invites him to have an exhibition in her gallery of New York, USA. Shows his work in the Costumbrista Museum of Sonora, in the Raúl Anguiano Museum, Guadalajara, in the  Franz Meyer Museum, México city, besides the sculptors encounter meeting México - Japan in Mérida. He obtains the prize of the International Art Call for the Festival of Guelph's Jazz Festival in Ontario, Canada.

2008 Exhibits at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, Holland,n the Cultural Metropolitan Space of Tampico, Tamaulipas, and the Vértice Gallery in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. IShows in complicity with Vladimir Cora the artwork Claroscuro in the Sebastian Foundation and critic Carlos Blas Galindo writes the catalogue presentation. He designs the scenery of the Jazz National Festival in the Nezahualcóyotl Auditorium of  UNAM, México city.

2009 Irapuato´s city inagurates the Jazzamoart Gallery. La Rana Editorial publishes a book about his art work with texts of Carlos Montemayors and Jorge Juanes. Exhibited at Laberinto Museum of San Luis Potosí and Piso 51 of Torre Mayor in Reforma Avenue, his work is included in the Museum of Latin American Art, L.A., California.
